What To Wear To An Escape Room

If you’re wondering what to wear to an escape room, you’ve come to the right blog. Whether you’re attending a buck’s party, trying out something new with a group of friends or celebrating a birthday, escape rooms are a fun way of bringing people together and challenging your problem-solving and teamwork capabilities.

Now we’re not the fashion police, but there are a few tips we can give you on what to wear to an escape room to help you enjoy the experience more and feel at your most comfortable (spoiler: it’s not a fashion show, and practicality is key).

So, let’s find out what to wear to an escape room.

You Don’t Need To Dress As A Detective

Fancy dress is absolutely fine, perhaps even encouraged by your passionate gamemasters, however, it’s by no means a necessity. You can dress as casually or as formally as you want to. As long as you’re able to move around and play the game, we’re not here to cancel out anybody’s style! That said, if you and your group do want to dress as detectives, something related to the room’s specific theme, or any other dress code, you’re more than welcome. As long as you’re not naked, we’re probably ok with it. Although, an inflatable suit might make things a bit more difficult in an enclosed space…

Functional Clothing That Facilitates Easy Movement

The main suggestion we can offer on what to wear to an escape room is functional clothing. In the context of an escape room, that means clothes that you can easily turn, bend and crouch in. Escape room games each have a different level of practical movement involved. But as a general rule, we suggest avoiding short skirts and tight or restrictive clothing – especially if you’re prone to claustrophobia.

Don’t forget – once you enter the room, you’ll be inside it for around an hour. So take a jumper you can easily tie around your waist to adjust your clothing for the room temperature. Ultimately, an escape room isn’t the place for showing off your best garments. So, wear breathable fabric, since you don’t want to get hot and sweaty with your teammates as the final minutes are ticking down! And don’t overthink it; just pick your outfit based on how well it allows you to move around a potentially tighter space.

Avoid Baggy & Low-Cut Clothing

The reason we suggest avoiding baggy clothing is because it can accidentally catch on or knock over props in the room. Aside from causing a rumble, you might end up breaking something or damaging an item that is actually needed to help you solve a puzzle (not to mention the potential awkwardness and cost of replacing it).

Alongside this, we recommend avoiding low-cut clothing for your personal comfort. There are cameras located in the ceiling and corners of the room which game masters use to monitor the experience, making sure you’re safe, happy and not going completely down the wrong track! It’s also how they’ll know you’re signalling for a hint.

Footwear You Can Walk In

An escape room rarely calls for intense physical activity, but you will be on your feet for the best part of an hour. Escape rooms don’t always have seats, so you want to choose footwear you can comfortably walk around in. For this reason, we recommend avoiding tall heels, but also for the element of safety.

Alongside this, it’s important to wear closed-toe shoes (not flip flops or sandals), in case any of the props should unexpectedly fall off a shelf. Sneakers or boots are always a good fit, because the last thing you want is to be distracted by blisters when you’re in the final five minutes of your escape time.

A Wristwatch & Hairband

Most of the time, there’ll be a timer or clock in the room to keep you on track with how long you have left to escape! But just in case, it’s wise to wear a watch, since you often can’t take a mobile phone into the escape room. This way, you’ll always be able to know how long you have left with a quick glance down.

If you have longer hair, a headband or hair tie can be useful to keep hair out of your face when you’re reading those all-important clues or looking at intricate puzzle designs.
